Backdrop, player and theme

The two layers your page is drawn in, and the four colours they read.

Last updated September 20261 min read

A page is built in layers: a backdrop fills the frame, a player sits on top of it, and either can be switched off. They are separate choices because they are separate things — a backdrop runs on its own clock, a player moves with the audio.

The ramp

Each layer carries four colours. The first is the page's base colour, and it decides something else as well: a pale base sets the whole page in near-black lettering, a dark one in white.

StepRole
1The page behind everything.
2The body of the effect.
3Its highlight.
4The top of the ramp.
Not every backdrop draws every step

The editor dims a step the chosen backdrop does not draw and says so under the row, so a colour you pick is a colour you will see.

Themes

The theme catalogue comes in two rows — dark pages and light pages — with the same families in both. A light theme is its dark twin lit from the other end: the base is the palest step and the player ends at the deepest colour instead of a white core.
