Audio capture
Exactly which audio goes out: a device, the whole machine, or one program.
MAWCast Studio is not released yet. This page describes how it will work; until then, connect your own encoder (see Connect your software).
The Audio input panel on the Studio tab has three modes. Choosing the right one is the difference between broadcasting your set and broadcasting your notifications.
| Mode | Captures | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Device | One input: a microphone, line in, an audio interface. | A mixer feeding the machine; a mic show. |
| System | Everything Windows plays on its default output. | Simple setups where the machine only plays the show. |
| Application | One program by itself, including the processes it starts. | rekordbox, VirtualDJ, Serato, a browser, a media player. |
In Device mode, pick the input from the list; in Application mode, pick the program from the list of open windows. The refresh button reads the list again — use it for a device you just plugged in or a program you just opened.
Application capture
Application mode takes the audio Windows is receiving from that program. The routing is done by the operating system, so there is nothing to install and nothing to re-patch when you change software.
It is the whole answer for DJ software that cannot broadcast to an Icecast station on its own: rekordbox, Serato and VirtualDJ. Select one of them here and its audio reaches your station with nothing in between.
Muting an application on your own machine does not mute it on air, and turning your speakers down does not turn the broadcast down. Studio captures the program's stream rather than what reaches your speakers — which is what lets a DJ cue and monitor locally without touching what listeners hear.
Notifications, video calls, a browser tab you forgot. If in doubt, use Application mode and name the program.
It is always listening
Studio captures as soon as a source is selected, not only when you are live: the meters and the visualizer move before you press GO LIVE, which is what makes a soundcheck possible. The mode and the source are locked while you are live, connecting or recording.
| Device | System and Application | |
|---|---|---|
| Sample rate | The encoder’s (44.1 or 48 kHz). | 48 kHz, 16-bit stereo, converted for the encoder. |
| Equaliser changes | Heard at once, even on air. | Applied at the next GO LIVE or RECORD. |
| Available on | Windows. | Windows. |
There is no input monitoring
Studio never plays the captured audio back: on a machine that is already playing it you would hear yourself twice, and with a microphone open it feeds back. Monitor in your DJ software or on your interface, where the routing is yours.
